CORVETTE GENERATIONS – C1

The first generation of Corvette was introduced late in 1953, with 300 hand-built convertibles manufactured for sale. All were Polo White with Red interior and Black soft-top. The 1953, 54, and 55 models were fitted as standard with the 235 cu in (3.9 L) Blue Flame inline-six engine, although GM’s brand new 265 cu in (4.34 L) V8 was available as an option in 1955. The addition of the V8 was a saviour for the poorly performing and poorly selling Corvette.

A new body appeared in 1956 with new front, a “cove” introduced on the sides, and a new rear without the tail lamp fins. The V8 engine was made standard in the car, and other improvements to the car included power windows and a power operated top. Then in 1957 the engine was upsized to 283 cu in (4.6 L), and an optional “Ramjet” fuel injection was introduced. Heavy-duty brakes and suspension, positraction and a four-speed manual transmission were also added in 1957. These performance upgrades were all due to the influence of Zora Arkus-Duntov, who almost single-handed saved Corvette from early extinction.

The 1958 model introduced additional chrome parts and four headlamps, along with an upgraded grille. Several engine options were introduced including a twin four-barrel carb option.

The 1961 model saw the introduction of four tail lamps, fitted to the boat-tail rear-end design that continued through to the C2. And for the last C1 model the 327 cu in engine was introduced which, with the Ramjet injection fitted, produced 360 hp (270 kw) making it the most powerful C1 Corvette to be produced.
